College Applications – Rejected and Deferred? Second Chances!

Second_Chance_College_Admissions_Programs_Dr_Paul_Lowe
College_Application_Rejected_Deferred_Dr_Lowe_Admissions_Expert

Year after year, I hear horror stories from parents whose children were accepted into their SAFETY schools because they thought the college admissions race was just about grades, SAT scores, their perceived “unique” applications, generic essays and “perfect” connections.  Their children are either outright rejected or deferred in the regular decision pool and then rejected.

I have even had four clients, this year, who assumed that they knew more than me, an admissions advisor with 29 years of experience, not follow my recommendations and advice to their essays and applications……only to be outright rejected from their top-choice schools.

Dr. Lowe specializes in helping students get into their top choice schools through our SECOND CHANCE programs – Off Deferral List and Reapplication-Transfer. Dr. Paul develops winning admissions strategies to help students off the deferral list to be accepted in the regular decision pool. He also successfully helps students who were rejected from the Ivies to transfer to the Ivies from their safety schools. We a have a 95% Acceptance rate with these programs, because by reviewing student applications and profiles and their mistakes, we know what went wrong!

If your child is among the students who were deferred and/or rejected you should consider the SECOND CHANCE Admissions programs.

College Application Decision: Deferred? Now What?

Application_deferred_Dr_Paul_Lowe

High School Seniors have received their College Admissions Early Decision/Early Action results.  The results are producing a mixture of palpable emotions.  While some happy students settle in for the holidays with their acceptance letters in hand, others will be disappointed and distressed in discovering that they have been deferred to the regular decision pool by the college or university.  For those who are deferred, their applications will be re-considered along with the thousands of Regular Decision applicants.  In the Regular Decision pool, the selection process becomes even more competitive and selective..

With only a few weeks left in the application season, I recommend that students scrupulously reevaluate their deferred early decision/early action application and carefully plan a workable strategy in this crunch-time.  You may need to hire an educational consultant who is an expert in post-decision admissions advising. Our team begins to implement a Post-Decision Strategy right away that will continue through regular decision.

For parents who engage our services after the news of deferral, I discover what the student did to be deferred, build upon their current student profile and accomplishments and re-energize their application so that they are removed from the deferred list and placed on the accepted list.

The worst thing a student can do is nothing.  What to do next? Now is the time to evaluate and successfully complete the admissions process by looking at your child through a professional lens. The worst thing parents can do is to try this post-decision process on their own.

Through our Knowledge Network, we know that between 5% – 10% of students who are deferred admissions are accepted to the same college Regular Decision. Those are pretty high odds! Based on our experience and 23-years track record of success, 90% of students who approach us and retain us before January 1, after being deferred are admitted Regular Decision.

This is the type of letter you want to receive!

Happy Diwali!

diwali_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Expert

Diwali, the five-day “Festival of Lights”, is one of the most popular and celebrated holidays in India.  The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. Diwali marks a spiritual awakening and symbolizes “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”.

There are several ways to say Happy Diwali:

  • In Hindi: “Diwali ki Shubhkamnayein” or “Shush Deepavali”
  • In Punjabi: “tuhanu Diwali diyan bohat both vadhaiyan”
  • In Gujarati: “Diwali ni mubarak or saal Mubarak”
  • In Tamil: “Deepavali nalvazhthukal”

What is significant and uplifting with respect to Diwali and my firm is that many of our clients observe Diwali as they are enjoying the campuses of their top-choice colleges which include, although are not limited to Brown, RPI, Boston University, Case Western, Cornell, Rice, Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth.  Many are now in the corresponding medical schools of their undergraduate BS/MD programs.

This year, on day four, I was given gifts and invited to participate in Diwali, with clients who are now friends whose children were accepted to Harvard, Brown (undergraduate), Brown PLME, Harvard, Yale, Cornell and Columbia.

Not All Legacy Applicants Are Accepted!

Legacy_Applicants_College_Admissions_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Independent_Educational_Consultant

Legacy admissions is complex and sometimes viewed as a controversial issue. However, the bottom-line is that legacy admissions exists. What is true is that legacy applicants are affirmatively accepted. Ivies and top schools do consider legacy applicants and in some cases being a legacy is advantage in the application process. Based on surveys and statistics over 70% of top U.S. colleges and universities in the United States factor legacy status into their admissions decisions..

Who is a legacy applicant:? An applicant whose parents attended or graduated from the college or university to which they are applying.

Legacy_Applicant_College_Admissions_Dr_Paul_Lowe

Many US colleges admit “legacies”, or students with a family connection to the university, at dramatically higher rates than other applicants. For example, At Harvard, the acceptance rate for legacy students is about 33%, compared with an overall acceptance rate of under 6%. In Harvard’s incoming class of 2023, 23% were legacy. Princeton’s legacy applicants are admitted at roughly four times the rate of applicants overall.

In a recent article in the Hechinger Report: As Elite College Applications Soar, Legacy Admissions Still Give Wealthy and Connected Students an Edge, an interesting point of view was given. “Admitting legacy students also helps fund scholarships”, said Angel Pérez, chief executive officer of NACAC, “Legacy admissions foster lifelong loyalties and are a direct result of the way colleges are financed, with so much dependence on tuition revenue,” he added.  So legacy admissions is not likely to end soon.

However, here is the other side.  Not all legacies are admitted, and increasingly, more and more legacy applicants are being rejected.

Rejected_Legacy_Applicants_College_Admissions_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Advisor_Independent_Educational_Consultant

Applications to colleges and universities have soared. Harvard surged by 42% to 57,000 applicants, Brown surged by 26% to 46,469 applicants and Princeton surged by 15% to 37,000 applicants.  The increase in applications has affected the highly competitive schools as well as the institutions that top students usually considered “safety schools”.  NYU surged by 20% to 100,000 applicants, UCLA surged by 28% to 139,000 applicants and Colgate surged by 102% to 17,392 applicants (last year Colgate had 8,582 applicants). With these numbers, more and more legacy applicants are being rejected. We have been receiving calls from legacy parents regarding the fact that their children are being waitlisted or outright rejected.
