Pre-med Advising in College

Premed advising in College

Many colleges have pre-med/health profession advisors for their students to ensure that students fulfill their pre-med requirements to become a candidate when applying for medical school.   They may even advise a student to consider a gap year.

However, based on our discussions with college students who have used their college pre-med/health profession advisors the details of clinical opportunities, doctor shadowing. medical school admissions profile, medical school branding, and their relationship to the actual medical school application and secondary applications and resumes are rarely discussed.  When I review their resumes, they are lacking depth or the appropriate clinical, research or volunteer experiences necessary to be a competitive medical school candidate.

So, what should a college student who wishes to be competitive medical school applicant do to stand out and increase their chances of acceptance to medical schools? HIRE AN EXPERT with experience and a track record of medical acceptances!

ROI_Return_On_Investment_Admissions_Expert

Lots of parents use the “do it yourself route” or hire an inexperienced educational consultant in attempt to navigate an oftentimes daunting, ever-changing and uncertain admissions/application process.

An applicant’s profile is really a conversation amongst admissions committee members. One component out of sync will raise red flags that will cause a rejection. An admissions expert will work with you to discover MISTAKES and omissions, as well as continually and comprehensively help you through the process in completing the task of applying to top educational institutions.

This year, I am celebrating my 29th year as an admissions/knowledge advisor specializing in helping students get accepted to elite boarding schools: Andover, Exeter, Choate, Deerfield, etc.; Ivy League colleges/universities: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc.; top BS/MD programs: Brown PLME, RPI/Albany Med, U Rochester (REMS) and top medical schools: Harvard Med, Johns Hopkins Med, UPenn Perelman Med, etc.

Your Personal Brand Matters for Admissions

Your Personal Brand in Admissions Matters

It is essential to accurately convey your personal brand in order to be accepted into an elite boarding school, Ivy League college/university, a direct BS/MD program or a top medical school.  Consider the following questions.

  1. How do you create and convey a distinct and memorable impression?
  2. How do you define the incomparable you?
  3. How do you persuade others to recognize the authentic irreplaceable value you will bring to an educational institution?
  4. How do you ensure that the admissions profile you create is about the unique you?
  5. How do you successfully communicate your personal brand to admissions committees?
  6. How do you avoid creating the wrong impression that will cause instant rejection?
  7. How do you assess your unique attributes in comparison to your peers?
  8. Do you know how people who don’t know you feel about you?
  9. Are you aware of the subliminal messages about yourself that you impart to people, verbally and/or non-verbally (body language)?

The informed responses to all these questions are the key to why MY clients are accepted.

Stand out in the college selection process

As an admissions advisor, Dr. Lowe understands the answers for each individual so that my clients are accepted!

Dr. Lowe has 29 years of practical experience helping applicants identify, craft and refine their personal narrative that will successfully communicate their admissions profile to admissions committees.

U.S. BS/MD vs. India MBBS

India_medical_doctors_US

Several of the parents who have called me for BS/MD programs, because of the competitive nature of BS/MD program medical school admissions, have been asking me about comparing U.S. BS/MD vs India MBBS degree and whether there is an advantage to a U.S. BS/MD.

First let’s define the degrees: Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a professional (post graduate) degree given in some countries like the USA, Canada etc. Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is the degree given in the United Kingdom, Ireland and other commonwealth countries like India and is considered equivalent to the MD.

For the Commonwealth countries, MBBS is an undergraduate course of study which is pursued by candidates who wish to make their career in the field of medicine. Whereas, MD is a postgraduate course that can be pursued by candidates who have completed their MBBS.

The US follows a different curriculum for obtaining a medical degree and license to practice Medicine. Unlike India, high school students apply to direct BS/MD programs and earn an M.D. upon completion of the program. Over the course of the program, the students have Pre-Medical courses and earn a Bachelor’s degree (up to four years of Undergraduate program), MD program (Four years) and USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1, 2 & 3). A Residency Program is required to complete the Licensing Exam. After completing all, a student

A student, after completion of MBBS, cannot practice directly since the basic level of study to practice is postgraduate medicine in the US. USMLE has clearly defined the medical courses after MBBS to be completed in the US.

How to Get Into Medical School After You’ve Been Rejected

Many students believe that to be a competitive medical school applicant you need to:

  • Do well in your courses,
  • Do well on your MCAT.
  • Take full course
  • Shadow multiple physicians
  • Engage in research.
  •  Serve regularly in meaningful ways in your community.
  • Gain hands-on patient care experiences
  • Obtain glowing letters of recommendations
  • Completed applications and essays

If it were that easy to be accepted, then everyone who applied would be accepted into medical school.  Every year, over 50,000 students apply to medical school, but 60% are rejected!  Statistics from the Association of American Medical Colleges reveal that about 17,000 more applicants sought admission to a U.S. med school during the 2021-2022 school year than nine years prior, a nearly 38% increase.

Here are reasons why more students being rejected:

  • Increase number of medical school applicants
  • Greater scrutiny of medical school applications
  • Mistakes on medical school applications
  • Low GPA
  • Low MCAT scores
  • Poor letters of recommendation
  • Poor or lack of advice

Here’s what you need to do if you have been rejected and will be reapplying:

  • Develop a winning narrative as to why you desire to and are committed to becoming a doctor.
  • Your application is not just about high MCAT scores and GPA, it’s about the interconnectedness of all parts.
  • Re-evaluate your medical school list based on your “best chance” schools
  • Re-evaluate your medical school application. Is it admissions ready?
  • Hire a medical school admissions advisor/expert who understands the re-application process and has the track record of helping students who are re-applying to be admitted.

Dr. Paul Lowe provides exclusive and specialized medical school admissions advisory services to U.S. and international students, including post-baccalaureate program and non-traditional applicants.
