It’s the 2022-2023 Early Decision and Early Action season!  Competition to Ivy League and highly selective colleges are expected to be high.  Therefore, expect many applicants with high SAT/ACT scores, high grades and seemly perfect applications and personal statements to be rejected or deferred to the regular decision pool.

College Application Decision: Deferred? Now What?

High School Seniors have received their College Admissions Early Decision/Early Action results.  The results are producing a mixture of palpable emotions.  While some happy students settle in for the holidays with their acceptance letters in hand, others will be disappointed and distressed in discovering that they have been deferred to the regular decision pool by the college or university.  For those who are deferred, their applications will be re-considered along with the thousands of Regular Decision applicants.  In the Regular Decision pool, the selection process becomes even more competitive and selective..

With only a few weeks left in the application season, I recommend that students scrupulously reevaluate their deferred early decision/early action application and carefully plan a workable strategy in this crunch-time.  You may need to hire an educational consultant who is an expert in post-decision admissions advising. Our team begins to implement a Post-Decision Strategy right away that will continue through regular decision.

For parents who engage our services after the news of deferral, I discover what the student did to be deferred, build upon their current student profile and accomplishments and re-energize their application so that they are removed from the deferred list and placed on the accepted list.

The worst thing a student can do is nothing.  What to do next? Now is the time to evaluate and successfully complete the admissions process by looking at your child through a professional lens. The worst thing parents can do is to try this post-decision process on their own.

Through our Knowledge Network, we know that between 5% – 10% of students who are deferred admissions are accepted to the same college Regular Decision. Those are pretty high odds! Based on our experience and 23-years track record of success, 90% of students who approach us and retain us before January 1, after being deferred are admitted Regular Decision.

The results are out for the college class of 2024 for several Ivy League and highly selective colleges and universities.  What we are discovering from parents who are calling us as to what happened is that students (and their parents) who believed that was just high GPA, top SAT scores, high grades and a manufactured application and personal statement have now discovered that it’s not all about that!

Even though the number of early applicants have decreased in some schools (Harvard, Duke and UPenn, to date), its still hypercompetitive to gain acceptance into these schools.

It has been a wonderfully satisfying early action/early decision season.  This year, 100% of our students who applied early decision/action to their top-choice schools, including Harvard, Brown, Yale, UPenn, Columbia and Dartmouth, were accepted!  How do we achieve our successful outcomes?  We work continually to know and understand our clients; we utilize this knowledge and couple it with our specialized awareness of how to make them stand out; we understand the changing admissions landscape better than high school guidance counselors, private school college counselors, and many independent educational consultants; and we continually visit schools to learn about their admissions policies and missions, which, in today’s world, has seemingly become a continuously evolving landscape.  Most importantly—our admissions strategies work!

Ivy League and highly selective colleges use a holistic approach and review process and a committee review approach process when evaluating applicants for admission.  That means admission to these colleges is not based on a simple formula of grades and test scores and what may parents may believe.  Instead, admissions officers/committees consider a variety of factors: the student’s academic record, extracurricular interests, intellectual achievements and personal background  and what I call “PERSONAL VIBE” to decide who will be rejected or accepted.

Harvard University Produces Wealthy Alumni

It’s college admissions time for rising seniors and I am now hearing from parents, high school guidance counselors and independent educational counselors state that it doesn’t matter where you attend college, as long as where you attend is a “good fit”.

Based on the fact that we live in a capitalistic and democratic society where money, prestige, status and brand matter, I disagree with this opinion. I published two blogs on this subject two years ago.  Does It Really Matter Where You Attend College? Absolutely! (2017)  Intellectual Wealth and Education (2017)

According to The University Ultra High Net Worth Alumni Rankings 2019, a recent study by Wealth-X, a leading global wealth information, research-intelligence and insight firm that tracks global wealth, there is a direct relationship between where you attended college and wealth. The study is based on research on wealth estimated wealth of (Ultra-High-Net-Worth (UHNW) alumni by alma mater.

Six out of eight Ivy League universities were featured in the top 20 list of U.S. universities for UHNW alumni. Each of the top 20 global universities on the ranking had at least 2,000 UHNW alumni, and the top five had more than 3,000. Ultra-high-net-worth is defined by Wealth-X as those with a net worth of greater than $30 million.

According to the most recent rankings, Harvard has more than 13,650 estimated UHNW alumni worth $4.769 trillion.

Dr. Lowe Visits Harvard College

Dr. Lowe and his team of admissions advisors visit Ivy League, prestigious and elite colleges several times annually, where they have the unique opportunity of interacting one-on-one with directors of admissions and senior admissions personnel. 

In May, I visited Harvard College.  This is my third visit to Harvard College this year.  Each visit, I have the opportunity to meet professors and admissions personnel and talk about the college.  I met several students on the Harvard Yard and they were friendly and modest.  I sensed that they knew that they would be the future world leaders.

This year, Harvard’s acceptance rate was a record-low 4.5 percent.  For the Class of 2023 with 1,950 of the 43,330 applicants.  This year marks the fifth consecutive application cycle in which the percentage of accepted applicants has decreased.

What does this mean for rising seniors (this year’s juniors)?

If Harvard is your first choice, it’s getting even harder to get accepted.

My recommendation?

Applicants will need an expert college admissions advisor who:

  1. has the experience and expertise in working with applicants who are applying to Ivy League colleges and universities.
  2. continually visits colleges and universities.
  3. understands how to efficiently and appropriately advise applicants.
  4. understands the admissions policies and what admissions officers are looking for.
  5. spends time with applicants brainstorming and implementing admissions strategies.
  6. guides applicants through the minefields of the Common Application, personal statements and supplemental/short answer essays.
