High School Juniors: Time To Get Serious About BS/MD Plans – Part II

If you are a high school junior or your son or daughter is a high school junior and you are thinking about applying to direct BS/MD programs, itโ€™s time to get really serious about either planning or implementing your plans.  With about 3 months left of your junior year, there is no time to waste!  You will need to avoid common mistakes as well as obscure omissions. In addition, it is important to polish your existing student profile. You may think itโ€™s great, however, it must measure up or be better that the 95% of applicants that will be rejected.

As students (even with the help of their parents) prepare for the college admissions process, they read books, look at videos or visit college forum-type websites which they believe may provide personalized answers for them.  These sources provide information that everyone else can see, but not customized strategies to help your child avoid mistakes.

Many parents who call us (and whose children are performing the above and have the “perfect” BS/MD profile) then believe that their child is a shoo-in for BS/MD programs and just need โ€œsomeโ€ advice.

Hereโ€™s a list of factors by admissions expert, Dr. Paul Lowe that you should consider if you are a junior seriously thinking about applying to BS/MD programs.

  1. Studentย CHARACTERย โ€“ Personality counts! Whatโ€™s your โ€œje ne sais quoiโ€?
  2. Theย HOOKย โ€“ If you donโ€™t have a hook, the admissions committee will not grab you!
  3. Theย STORYย โ€“ Itโ€™s all about the story and how itโ€™s framed and presented! No good story, no acceptance!ย  Certain rejection!
  4. Common Application:ย PERSONAL STATEMENTย โ€“ Meaningful, well-written and convincing personal statement needed. No flow, harmony, tone combined with gravitas โ€“ rejection!
  5. COLLEGE-SPECIFIC SUPPLEMENTALSย โ€“ You must complement and synergize your supplementals with your personal statement. All the school-specific essays are important, even the 50 word-count answers! Students have been rejected because of mistakenly using one word or a sentence in 50 word-count essays!
  6. COLLEGE-SPECIFIC-BS/MD ESSAYSย โ€“ The โ€œWhy doctor essay?โ€ โ€œI want to help peopleโ€. Everyone in the service industry does that!
  7. COLLEGE APPLICATION VIDEO ESSAYย โ€“ Schools are seriously viewing these videos. Did we say Brown PLME? Check out ourย College Admissions Video Productionsย partnership.
  8. The effective and boldย RESUMEย โ€“ Itโ€™s not just about a 2โ€“3-page resume with lots of research and extracurricular activities which is just a list. It has to be framed correctly or it looks boring and generic!
  9. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIESย โ€“ Are your extracurricular activities meaningless or meaningful? Do they really interconnect to your student profile in a meaningful way? Have you become the jack-of-all extracurricular activities? The master of none? Are you a drive-by extracurricular activities person?
  10. VOLUNTEERISMย โ€“ Itโ€™s not just about tutoring underprivileged children, participating in an ESVE (Expensive Summer Volunteer Activity) or starting your own nonprofit organization. There is more to volunteering than just volunteering!!!
  11. WOW FACTORย โ€“ Whatโ€™s your WOW Factor? How and when can you use it to WOW admissions? You want the admissions committee to say โ€œWOW! We want this applicant on our campus.โ€
  12. INTERVIEWSย โ€“ You may be seemingly be all that on paper; grades, SATs recommendations, volunteering to save the world, 1000 hours of shadowing, however, one incorrect word or statement in an interview results in a rejection โ€“ Thatโ€™s right, just one!
  13. ETIQUETTEย โ€“ Think that doesnโ€™t matter? Think thatโ€™s old-school? Think again! Are you mindful of how you present yourself and how people perceive you?ย Itโ€™s not what you say, itโ€™s how you say it!ย  Etiquette matters! We provide personalized etiquette strategies for our clients.
  14. MANNERSย โ€“ When you say something (or write something) what counts is not what you mean but how you are heard and perceived.ย  Are you mindful of your manners?ย  Manners matters!ย Do you know when or if you sound rude, pretentious, impolite, disrespectful, unrefined or worse โ€“ uncultivated?
  15. WHO ARE YOU? – What are your values? What do you stand for? Can you define you? Why are you different? Are you aware how you perceives you?
  16. DIVERSITY – What’s your diversity intelligence? What’s the meaning of diversity to you? It’s not just a word to be used throughout an essay. It’s not just about being a member of your school’s diversity club. Colleges seek students who truly understand the meaning of diversity. Diversity matters!
  17. UNCONSCIOUS BIASย โ€“ It may occur at any time, at any level or at any stage during your admissions process.ย Can you identify it? How must you successfully deal with it? How do you overcome it for successful admissions decisions?
  18. UNIVERSITY PRIORITIESย โ€“ Colleges are not accepting applicants for just top grades and their perceived amazing resumes and achievements, they are continually adjusting and building diverse campus communities and future global networks based on geopolitics, geo-economics and their financials. School admissions policies and institutional priorities change year to year and region to region to match their goals. What makes you believe that you know these policies and priorities better than a boutique admissions firm that has superior access to current information and admissions trends?
  19. Theย KNOW-HOW. So, you really believe itโ€™s just (1-18)? You need the Know How: How do you do theย right-things theย right-way and with theย right-people at theย right-time? ย Our proprietary-knowledge, unmatched experience, admissions success and years of close working relationships with admissions professionals ensures that you do itย right!

So you really believe that factors 13-18 are unimportant? Think again!

If you know how to plan, develop and implement (1-19) and how they are used in BS/MD admissions โ€“ thatโ€™s wonderful!!! But if you donโ€™t, there is an increased probability that you (and your child) will make irrevocable mistakes that will cause instant rejections to all schools. Would you want this to happen after your years of planning as a parent and your childโ€™s hard work?

The parents who retain Dr. Paul Lowe and his team of consultants may take risks in business and investments, but not risks in their childrenโ€™s educational future โ€“ to become a medical doctor. The ones who do take risks in their childrenโ€™s education โ€“ 95% of them bet WRONG!

Why take on RISKS in your child’s educational journey and career future?

Not All Legacy Applicants Are Accepted!

Legacy_Applicants_College_Admissions_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Independent_Educational_Consultant

Legacy admissions is complex and sometimes viewed as a controversial issue. However, the bottom-line is that legacy admissions exists. What is true is that legacy applicants are affirmatively accepted. Ivies and top schools do consider legacy applicants and in some cases being a legacy is advantage in the application process. Based on surveys and statistics over 70% of top U.S. colleges and universities in the United States factor legacy status into their admissions decisions..

Who is a legacy applicant:? An applicant whose parents attended or graduated from the college or university to which they are applying.

Legacy_Applicant_College_Admissions_Dr_Paul_Lowe

Many US colleges admit โ€œlegaciesโ€, or students with a family connection to the university, at dramatically higher rates than other applicants. For example, At Harvard, the acceptance rate for legacy students is about 33%, compared with an overall acceptance rate of under 6%. In Harvardโ€™s incoming class of 2023, 23% were legacy. Princetonโ€™s legacy applicants are admitted at roughly four times the rate of applicants overall.ย

In a recent article in the Hechinger Report:ย As Elite College Applications Soar, Legacy Admissions Still Give Wealthy and Connected Students an Edge, an interesting point of view was given. โ€œAdmitting legacy students also helps fund scholarships”, said Angel Pรฉrez, chief executive officer of NACAC, โ€œLegacy admissions foster lifelong loyalties and are a direct result of the way colleges are financed, with so much dependence on tuition revenue,โ€ he added. ย So legacy admissions is not likely to end soon.

However, here is the other side.ย  Not all legacies are admitted, and increasingly, more and more legacy applicants are being rejected.

Rejected_Legacy_Applicants_College_Admissions_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Advisor_Independent_Educational_Consultant

Applications to colleges and universities have soared. Harvard surged by 42% to 57,000 applicants, Brown surged by 26% to 46,469 applicants and Princeton surged by 15% to 37,000 applicants. ย The increase in applications has affected the highly competitive schools as well as the institutions that top students usually considered โ€œsafety schoolsโ€. ย NYU surged by 20% to 100,000 applicants, UCLA surged by 28% to 139,000 applicants and Colgate surged by 102% to 17,392 applicants (last year Colgate had 8,582 applicants). With these numbers, more and more legacy applicants are being rejected. We have been receiving calls from legacy parents regarding the fact that their children are being waitlisted or outright rejected.

Class of 2025 Admissions Rates – Ivy League and Highly Competitive Colleges/Universities

college_admissions_acceptance_rates_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Expert_Independent_Educational_Consultant

In an April 7th Washington Post article: Applications Boom, Admit Rates Plummet: Prestige College Admissions Get a Little Crazier in the Pandemic the following was stated โ€œThe chase for the Ivy League and other prestige collegesโ€ฆgrew a few degrees more frenzied during the coronavirus pandemic as applications soared and admit rates plummeted to, in some cases, crazy-low single digits. On Tuesday, the eight private universities โ€œidentified with the brand of the climbing vine released admission decisions for the entering fall class.โ€

Even during the coronavirus pandemic, even during economic uncertainty and even with the effect of fewer international students applying to US colleges and universities, Ivy League schools still maintain their brand and value. In one of my blogs, “Why Attend an Ivy League University ?“, I addressed the value of an Ivy League education.

For students who were waitlisted or even rejected, now is the time to discuss off-waitlist strategies or re-application strategies as a transfer student. College Transfer Admissions

College Admissions – Teacher Recommendations

Teacher_Recommendation_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor_Independent_Educational_Consultant

Teacher recommendations are an important part of the college admissions process. Many colleges and universities require two teacher recommendations.

Teacher_Letter_of_Recommendation_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor_Independent_Educational_Consultant

Letters of recommendation should be from teachers who have taught you in core academic subjects in your junior or senior year. Ideally, they should be from different core subject areas and from teachers who know you well, like you, and are likely to write well. From my discussion with admissions officers, colleges are more interested in obtaining teacher recommendations from instructors that describe your abilities, performance and motivation of success in their classroom and your willingness to work hard as a learner. My discussion with several Ivy League admissions officers revealed that they use teacher recommendations to add a more subjective and personal perspective to their assessment of your qualifications, which can reveal aspects of your personality that don’t always come out on paper.

You should approach your teachers in the early spring of your junior year, or, if you are asking senior teacher, early in the fall of your senior year not only to to give them sufficient time to write the letter, but also because many teachers set limits on how many students they are able to accommodate.

Why Attend An Ivy League University?

Why_Ivy_League_Dr_Paul_Lowe_IEC_Admissions_Advisors_Educational_Consultant_IECA_HECA

With record number of students applying to Ivy League schools you may wish to ask WHY the Ivies?

Dr_Paul_Lowe_Ivy_League_Admissions_Expert_Advice

The annual cost to attend (tuition, fees, housing, food, books, misc.) gives pause to many potential applicants:ย  Harvard: $76,479; Brown: $78,688; Princeton: $75,210; Dartmouth: $79,967. So, what’s really happening here?ย  Tuition is rising, yet U.S. as well as international students are competitively applying to these schools.ย  What do these institutions have that others may not?ย  This is a question I hear, year after year, and from several parents in my recent webinar.ย ย

Let’s start with the seemingly intangibles:

  • The institutions have prestigious brands
  • They have global alumni networks
  • They maintain international connections on every continent.

And then there is more – money!ย  Or in the non-profit lexicon, endowments (in 2020) for example:ย  Harvard $41.9 billion; Yale $31.2 billion, Princeton $25.9 billion, UPenn: $14.9 billion, Columbia: 41.0 billion, Cornell: $7.2 billion, Dartmouth: $6.0 billion, Brown: $4.7 billion.ย  The Ivies have the financial assets to weather the COVID-19 tsunami and provide top-rate education without any drastic financial cuts.ย ย

You might ask why this even matters. Far fewer than 1 percent of undergraduate students at American colleges and universities attend the Ivy League or similarly selective schools. But who gets into these institutions makes a difference for the United States, because their graduates are so overrepresented in our countryโ€™s Judicial Branch. Every current Supreme Court justice, save one, attended an Ivy League law school: Justice Alito (Yale), Justice Barrett (Notre Dame), Justice Breyer (Harvard), Justice Gorsuch (Harvard), Justice Kavanaugh (Yale), Justice Kagan (Harvard), Chief Justice Roberts (Harvard), Sotomayor (Yale) and Justice Thomas (Yale).

Several recent U.S. presidents including Donald Trump have been educated, at some point, at an Ivy League school โ€” including Yale double legacy George W. Bush, Bill Clinton (Yale) and Barack Obama (Columbia and Harvard).ย  More than 40 Harvard alumni โ€” either undergrad or graduate โ€” won seats in Congress in 2016.ย Newly appoint and current Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen Brown (Economics/AB) Yale Economics/PhD).

So why attend an Ivy League university?ย  When you imagine the possibilities, the question should be…”Why not?

Regular Decision Notification Dates: 2021

laptop_rejected_on_college_admissions_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor_Independent_Educational_Consultant

Based on our research and discussions with directors/deans of admissions and admissions officers, regular decision applicants will be receiving their decision notifications in Marchย and early April. It will be another highly competitive year!

Ivy League and highly selective colleges are already reporting a surge in regular decision applications. ย The reason for this dramatic increase is likely multifactorial.ย  Perhaps, this is primarily because many students who took gap years and are now applying.ย  Additionally, more international students are applying and the prestige and brand of elite colleges is more coveted in a market of uncertainty. ย Add to these facts many colleges have accelerated planned changes their standardized testing requirements since the start of the pandemic, which has encouraged more high school seniors to apply.ย

WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESULT? Harvard surged by 42% to 57,000 applicants, Brown surged by 26% to 46,469 applicants and Princeton surged by 15% to 37,000 applicants. ย The increase in applications has affected the highly competitive schools as well as the institutions that top students usually considered โ€œsafety schoolsโ€. ย NYU surged by 20% to 100,000 applicants, UCLA surged by 28% to 139,000 applicants and Colgate surged by 102% to 17,392 applicants (last year Colgate had 8,582 applicants).

Ivy_League_Applications_2021_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor_Independent_Educational_Consultant

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Within a month or so high school seniors will begin to discover, after all their hard work that they will be accepted, wait-listed or rejected. In this case, many will be rejected! Specifically, based on our projections, over 95% of students who applied to the Ivies will be rejected!

Here are regular decision notification dates (and approximate times) for Ivy League and highly selective colleges and universities:

  • Barnard College:ย  Late March 2021

It’s A New Admissions Year – 2021

2021_admissions_with_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Independent_Educational_Consultant_Advisor

Happy New Year! Welcome to Dr. Paul Lowe Admissions Expert Blog – 2021

Happy-new-year_2021_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Expert_Advisor_Independent_Educational_Consultant

The past year has been full of uncertainty. As a consequence of the myriad of transitions, changes, adjustments and adaptations, now thereโ€™s a whole new admissions world. Education has moved from in-person to online learning and there has been an increase in the number of applications to top private day and boarding schools, Ivy League and highly selective colleges and universities and BS/MD programs! The College Board recently announced that it is eliminating the SAT subject tests and optional essay-writing section!

The one constant we have observed last year and the beginning of this year, is that parents want the best education for their children whether itโ€™s K-12, college or graduate school.

As families navigate through these extraordinary and unparalleled admissions times, having an expert who can help make objective decisions is invaluable. As experts, we understand the fluctuating landscape and degrees of complexity in the current admissions scenarios so that students can avoid mistakes, stay focused and attain successful admissions decisions. Our knowledge-intelligence that results in our admissions success involves our ability to plan, to know how to adjust and when to change effectively.

Following last yearโ€™s admissions season, we heard from many parents and school counselors whose students applied ED to the Ivies and were rejected, yet we have clients who were accepted ED to Harvard, Yale, Brown, UPenn, Columbia and Cornell. And our Brown PLME acceptance rate was just amazing!ย  Brown PLME: Early Decision Results

Year after year, parents and fellow consultants ask us, whatโ€™s your secret? How do you provide stellar admissions results? Itโ€™s actually quite simple and conspicuously obviousโ€ฆ.We areย DIFFERENT!

Brown PLME: Early Decision Results

This year, we have had an increased number of clients applying to direct BS/MD programs. Few of our clients, by their choice, decided to apply to Brown Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) because they felt that ED may be too restrictive. We respect our clients’ choices!

Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) reported: From a pool of 2,530 ED applicants, 88 students were admitted to PLME.

We are happy to report Dr. Lowe and his teamโ€™s results. Here are the results of our 8 clients who applied to Brown PLME Early Decision:

  • 5 were admitted to the College and PLME
  • 1 was rejected from PLME, but admitted to the College
  • 1 deferred from PLME to regular decision
  • 1 rejected from PLME (College and PLME), but was accepted Early Action to MIT

Brown University:ย โ€œPLME applicants areย strongly encouragedย to submit a video portfolio as part of the application process. The video portfolio provides a wonderful opportunity for us to learn more about you.โ€ย

This year, Dr. Lowe and his admissions team partnered with the affiliate website:ย College Admissions Video Productionsย and successfully advised their clients in developing amazing video portfolios!
