Brown PLME: Early Decision Results

Brown_PLME_Early_Decision_Results_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Independent_Educational_Consultant

This year, we have had an increased number of clients applying to direct BS/MD programs. Few of our clients, by their choice, decided to apply to Brown Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) because they felt that ED may be too restrictive. We respect our clients’ choices!

Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) reported: From a pool of 2,530 ED applicants, 88 students were admitted to PLME.

We are happy to report Dr. Lowe and his team’s results. Here are the results of our 8 clients who applied to Brown PLME Early Decision:

  • 5 were admitted to the College and PLME
  • 1 was rejected from PLME, but admitted to the College
  • 1 deferred from PLME to regular decision
  • 1 rejected from PLME (College and PLME), but was accepted Early Action to MIT

Brown University: “PLME applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a video portfolio as part of the application process. The video portfolio provides a wonderful opportunity for us to learn more about you.”

College Admissions: What Do Admissions Officers Look For?

Admissions_officers-applications_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Independent_Educational_Consultant

Parents always ask me: What do admissions officers look for?

We tend to think that college admissions officer/committees focus primarily on the tangible factors that are measurable and quantifiable: grades, standardized test scores, (SAT and ACT) and subject tests (AP and IB) and extracurricular activities: “saving the world”, tutoring and volunteering to help the underprivileged.

The reality is that their emotions, feelings (and biases) and value judgement play a significant role in admissions decision.

Based on my professional experience and continually visiting colleges, and discussions with directors of admissions, there are other factors (and their interrelationships) which we have identified and understand that are just as important to help our clients gain admissions to Ivy League and highly selective colleges and universities and direct BS/MD programs:

  • College application presentation
  • Personal Statement
  • Supplemental essays
  • Collective interrelationship of all essays
  • WOW Factor
  • Attitude
  • Likability
  • Etiquette
  • Character
  • Grit/Challenge
  • Confidence
  • Charisma
  • Sense of self
  • Sense of others
  • Sense of surroundings
  • Interactions
  • Engagement
  • Unsaid
  • Conversational Intelligence
  • Cadence
  • Transparency
  • Civic Engagement
  • Cultural Intelligence
  • Cultural Agility
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Originality
  • Uniqueness
  • Diversity/Inclusion
  • Family background
  • Comparative Student Profile Analysis

Year after year, I hear the horror stories from parents whose kids got in nowhere because they thought the college admissions race was just about grades, SAT scores, their perceived  ‘unique’ applications, generic essays and perfect connections.”

Ivy League and highly selective colleges use a holistic approach and review process and a committee review approach process when evaluating applicants for admission.  That means admission to these colleges is not based on a simple formula of grades and test scores and what may parents may believe.  Instead, admissions officers/committees (with diverse backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities and perceptions) consider a variety of factors: the student’s academic record, extracurricular interests, intellectual achievements and personal background  and what I call “PERSONAL VIBE” to decide who will be rejected or accepted.

2020 Best BS/MD Program: Brown PLME

Your_BS_MD_Admissions_GAME_PLAN_Dr_Paul_Lowe

“Your BS/MD Admissions Game Plan” is a blog series created by Dr. Paul Lowe that discusses BS/MD Admissions.  With such a competitive environment and the immeasurable value and benefits of BS/MD programs, the need for an admissions game plan is ESSENTIAL.

At BS/ MD Admissions, we discern that many students and parents are clueless about what to do, when to do it, where to do it, who to contact, and why do it.  They fail to discover what they are doing that’s wrong, or they discover what they’ve been doing is wrong when it’s too late!

BROWN UNIVERSITY’S PROGRAM IN LIBERAL MEDICAL EDUCATION (PLME)

Before continuing into this blog, we must mention two disclaimers: (1) Dr. Paul Lowe is a Brown graduate and was an Area Chair of the Brown Alumni Schools Committee which interviewed applicants to Brown University and the PLME, and Dr. Nadine Cartwright-Lowe is a graduate of Brown PLME (2) Year after year, we have clients who are not only accepted to Brown undergraduate, but also Brown PLME. Therefore, we know Brown!

The most prestigious BS/MD programs are Northwestern HPME and Brown PLME. However, because Northwestern’s Honors Program in Medical Education (HPME) will not be taking applications for 2020. Brown indisputably is the 2020 BEST BS/MD program.

Brown’s Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) is the only Ivy League – BS/MD program.  On the undergraduate side, through its Open Curriculum, it allows students the academic freedom to enroll in the courses that interest them rather than a “premed curriculum” PLME also does not require its students to take the MCAT and the only academic requirement is that a minimum 3.0 GPA be maintained in biology courses.  PLME is also one of the few BS/MD programs that accepts international students.

PLME students may choose any one of the nearly 100 departmental and interdepartmental concentration programs offered at the University.  PLME students complete a four-year undergraduate program by receiving a A.B. or Sc.B. degree.  Students can then proceed directly to Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School.

What makes Brown University PLME the top and most prestigious BS/MD program?

  • Ivy League
  • Open Curriculum
  • No MCAT requirement
  • Accepts international students

At BS/MD Admissions Advisors, we know Brown!  Unlike other educational consultants, we constantly visit Brown and understand the nuances and changes in its admission policies.  Our BS/MD admissions experts:  Dr. Paul Lowe is a Brown graduate and active alumni and Dr. Nadine Cartwright-Lowe is a Brown PLME graduate, an active alumni and a licensed internist.

On January 21, Brown University had its ceremonial procession through the Van Wickle Gates.

This unique procession involved 51 transfer and 6 visiting students who started their classes at Brown, become a part of the Brown community and enjoy the Brown academic and social experiences.

The Mid-Year Transfer Program is designed specifically for incoming sophomores.  To be eligible for transfer admission to Brown, a student must have completed at least one full year of college study (or its equivalent) before their planned matriculation at Brown.

This year, all of our clients who applied to Brown’s Midyear transfer program were accepted!

Congratulations to students and their parents!

Our parents-clients are happy, overjoyed and excited that they can now call their sons and daughters – Brown University students and future alumni!

Are You Ready To Be Admitted to Your Dream College or University (5 Reasons Why You Must Hire College Admissions Experts)

Because of the increasing competition to get into top colleges, many families feel overwhelmed and stressed by the college admissions process. Moreover, the process can seem so complex that families may want the assistance, resources and knowledge of an expert who focuses solely on the college admissions process and who spends more time and individualized attention than guidance counselors can provide.  Many parents and students discover too late (their children receive rejection letters) in the college admissions process that they should have hired a college admissions expert.

If your child is applying to Ivy League and highly selective colleges as well as combined BS/MD programs, you may want to consider the below:

(1) In a February 2015, in an op-ed piece in USA Today, former First Lady Michelle Obama, wrote eloquently: “There’s the world of the schools most of our kids attend where school counselors are too often under-valued and overstretched, and they simply don’t have what they need to do their jobs. While the American School Counselor Association recommends no more than 250 students per counselor, the national average is one counselor for every 471 students. And often, school counselors are burdened with all kinds of unrelated responsibilities such as proctoring exams, substitute teaching, even monitoring the lunchroom. Many school counselors find themselves doing triage, juggling those duties while trying to help kids in crisis and also keep up with the latest college admissions deadlines and requirements.”

(2)  The National Association for College Admission Counseling’s (NACAC) 2014 State of College Admissions reported that on average, high school guidance counselors spend only 24 percent of their time on college admissions counseling. High school guidance counselors spend the majority of their time on school activities unrelated to college admissions.

(3)  The National Association for College Admission Counseling survey indicated that high school guidance counselors have an average caseload of 125 to as high as 500 students making them unable to provide adequate college guidance.

(4) The Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) stated: “An educational consultant brings to the family the knowledge and skills of an experienced professional coupled with a commitment to assuring the [student’s] best interests are met. Educational consultants counsel students and their families in the selection of educational programs based on the student’s individual needs and talents.”

(5) The Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA) stated: “A professional educational consultant works one-on-one with each student, helping to identify colleges and universities that offer the best matches for the student’s unique needs, and keeping the student on track through every phase of the college application process.”

“Top qualified applicants, after all their hard work (and parents’ work) and preparation deserve the best and should not settle for less” – Dr. Paul Lowe
