On Tuesday, Sept. 8, I was present at Brown’s 263rd Opening Convocation, welcoming the nearly 3,300 incoming undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and medical students.

Waving Brown pennants, Brown’s newest students passed through the Van Wickle Gates in a time-honored procession before gathering on the College Green. The Gates open for two ceremonial purposes: to welcome new students to Brown and to allow graduating students to process outward at the conclusion of their Brown experience.

I was so delighted to meet all 15 of my former Brown PLME clients who are now members of the Class of 2030, along with their proud, happy, excited parents!

Why Dr. Paul Lowe Does Not Offer One-Time Consultations with Parents?

Dr. Paul Lowe does not offer one-time consultations because admissions is a complex, non-linear process and not a transactional issue that can be resolved with quick fixes. A single 60-minute meeting results in general and generic advice rather than meaningful, personalized guidance.

Successful admissions outcomes require thoughtful strategy, mistakes/risk avoidance, sustained advocacy, and ongoing support. Understanding a student’s strengths, needs, and developing an acceptance-admissions path takes time; having a one-time consultation is one dimensional and only reflects a parent’s perspective. Legacy admissions is a complex and often controversial topic, but it remains a factor at many selective colleges and universities. Ivy League and other top schools may consider legacy status during the admissions process, and in some cases, it can provide an advantage. Surveys and statistics indicate that more than 70% of leading U.S. colleges and universities consider legacy status when making admissions decisions

A legacy applicant is typically a student whose parents attended or graduated from the college or university to which the student is applying.

Many U.S. colleges admit legacy applicants—students with a family connection to the institution—at significantly higher rates than non-legacy applicants. For example, Harvard’s legacy acceptance rate has been reported at about 33%, compared with an overall acceptance rate below 6%. In Harvard’s incoming Class of 2023, 23% of students were legacies. Princeton has also admitted legacy applicants at roughly four times the overall applicant rate.
