Gaining Admission to Ivy-Plus Colleges and Top BS/MD Programs

Ivy League Race
Ivy League Acceptance First Place

Getting into one of the Ivy League plus colleges or top BS/MD programs has always been something of a blood sport among parents who want the best education for their children.

Dr Lowe attends conferences and meetings at schools, making himself known to admissions officers and deans of admissions at his client’s top choice schools.

To make a final admission decision to admit an applicant, admissions officers look for distinctive qualities that set a candidate apart in the application pool such as an exceptional academic achievement, a meaningful contribution, a special talent, or an authentic voice. “That authentic voice comes through in essays and interviews,” states Dr. Lowe.

Schools are not looking for well-rounded students.  They are looking for well-rounded student bodies specific to a school’s incoming class.

Ninety percent of applicants are academically qualified. So, the question becomes, who is the person? Who are we admitting?  What does this person add to this incoming class? Admissions officers read between the lines and that’s where the discussion usually starts. It’s not just about GPA’s, test scores and extracurricular activities.  It’s also about avoiding and explaining red flags that appear in an application.

Dr. Lowe answers those questions by developing winning admissions profile as well as understanding what schools are looking for in real-time.

After one of my seminars, I overheard a high school counselor state that “hiring private counselor is a joke.”  Really? That year, my client, who was ranked number 16 in the school counselor’s school, was accepted to Brown PLME, Yale, Harvard and Princeton. The valedictorian, salutatorian and other top students were not admitted to any Ivy or even a BS/MD program! My track record and admissions success speak to what I do – RESULTS!

Why Your Child’s Admissions Profile Development Should Begin Before Senior Year

By the time students begin their college applications, many essential parts of their admissions story should already be in place: academic choices, extracurricular involvement, leadership, service, and developing interests.

Dr. Lowe’s admissions experience and expertise show that students do not need to map out their entire future in ninth grade. However, they should begin shaping and strengthening their admissions profile early in high school.

Long before senior year, students should be:

  • Building a strong, appropriately challenging academic foundation.
  • Exploring activities that genuinely interest them rather than simply collecting résumé lines
  • Taking on greater responsibility, leadership, or initiative over time
  • Testing possible academic interests through classes, programs, jobs, research, volunteering, or independent projects.

Senior year is when students submit applications. But the college process—and the development of a meaningful application that leads to acceptance—starts much earlier.

Through Winning Admissions Strategies, Dr. Lowe helps students build a strong admissions profile and connect its key elements to achieve RESULTS: acceptance to Ivy-plus colleges and universities and top direct BS/MD programs.

Parents of high school seniors sometimes still need guidance. When time permits, Dr. Lowe helps these families strengthen their admissions profiles before they submit their applications (Early Decision and Regular Decision).

Extracurricular Activities – The Most Misunderstood Aspect of College Applications

Extracurricular activities just might be the most misunderstood aspect of college applications. Too often, families make the mistake of thinking that the more glamorous, prestigious, and amazing the activity is, the more impressed admissions officers will be. Not so! The activity itself is only half of the equation; how a student reflects on it in their application essays matters just as much. Admissions officers can easily spot “resume padding”.

Many families assume that founding an NGO, securing a high-profile internship through family connections, enrolling a costly “selective” pre-college summer program, or creating a glossy “international non-profit” guarantees admissions success. In my discussions with admissions officers, they see right through it.

Over the years, my ongoing conversations with admissions officers at Ivy Plus institutions and top BS/MD programs have revealed a clear consensus on what they value in extracurricular activities:

  • Depth over breath: Your commitment to 2 or 3 meaningful activities over several years beats a laundry list of superficial memberships every time.
  • Real Impact: Did you have a true impact on your immediate community which includes your family, school, local town, state, etc.?
  • Initiative and Character: Are you overcoming real obstacles, demonstrating responsibility, reliability, responsibility and drive?

Admissions officers at top universities aren’t looking for a high-volume list of glossy titles. They look for depth, initiative, and authentic impact within a student’s actual sphere of influence. Admissions teams evaluate achievements relative to the opportunities available to students, prioritizing meaningful commitment and engagement over perceived glamour.
