Many private day schools as well as boarding schools are reporting an increase in the number of applications. Our firm is also experiencing an increase in inquiries regarding our private school and boarding school admissions advisory services. In a recent conference, Rhode Island Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green indicated that approximately 80 percent of Rhode Island students in grades three through eight were not proficient in math and only a third were reading at grade level the during pandemic-interrupted 2020-2021 school year, according to standardized test scores released Thursday by the state. It was reported that Infante-Green said Rhode Island joins most states around the country – including Massachusetts and Connecticut – in seeing proficiency rates fall during the pandemic.
Private schools have seen a flurry of new interest from families who view private schools as being better equipped to provide robust instruction, given their financial resources, space and nimbleness in adapting. As a result of this interest, the competition for coveted spots have increased.
Earlier this year, many students who applied to top boarding schools, including Exeter, Andover, St. Paul’s and Choate were place on waitlists and were eventually notified that could not gain entrance this past fall. In a letter to families, one boarding school stated in April, 2021: “At this time, it is clear that we will be unable to admit students from our waiting list in the near future as we anticipate being overenrolled….followed by another note in August 2021: “…we remain fully enrolled and as such, will be unable to offer admission to any students from our waiting list. I am sorry not to have better news for you and on behalf of all of my colleagues here in the admission office”.

It is hard to believe that the 2021-2022 boarding school admissions season is just about here! Just 5 months ago our clients were receiving their acceptance notifications to schools like Exeter, Andover, Choate, Deerfield, Lawrenceville, Taft, Deerfield, Loomis, Hotchkiss and similar top schools.. Blog: Elite Boarding Schools Matter
We are receiving calls from parents who are inquiring about retaining the services of an educational consultant for direct admissions to the ninth grade or for reapplication (because their child was rejected or waitlisted last admissions cycle. Many parents were quite surprised when their child was either outright rejected or placed on (perpetual) waitlists.
Many top boarding schools, including Exeter, are now writing parents to let them know that they remain fully enrolled for (2021-2022) and as such, will be unable to offer admission to any students from our waiting list.
It’s important to note that this admissions cycle (2021-2022) will be hypercompetitive (domestic applications are expected to be up by 20 percent). Why? Because more parents became aware of the benefits and multiple advantages of a boarding school education for their children. A published article in the New York Times, “The Boarding-School Boom” confirmed what we have been advising our clients who have been accepted to top boarding schools… there is now hyper-competition in boarding school admissions. Additionally, because of the high rejection (and waitlists) last year, more students are reapplying for ninth grade as well as 10th grade spots.
Many parents who believed that their child would be off the waitlist had to have their children attend a public school for the 9th grade and reapply for the 9th or 10th grade. We advise parents to consider using a private educational consultant who can assess their child’s student profile, review last year’s application (to find mistakes), understand the changing nuances in admissions and who have long standing relationships with admissions professionals at schools.
It’s important that you will need to consider the admissions experts – Dr. Lowe and his team for successful admissions.

It’s April and parents continue to frantically call our offices or email us regarding waitlists! The common message: My child was waitlisted at a particular top boarding school or several boarding schools. They’re usually referring to one or all of the Ten Schools. Many decide to wait patiently, try to see what they can do on their own and then perhaps reapply next year to the 10th grade on their own.
Here is the problem with this approach. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected boarding school admissions. More parents are interested in the boarding school dynamic and aware of the superior education at top boarding schools. A recently published article in the New York Times: “The Boarding-School Boom” has confirmed what we have been advising our clients who have been accepted to top boarding schools…..there is now hyper-competition in boarding school admissions.
Several schools have reported to us, this year, that they had a record number of applicants and they were able to admit a mere 10% of all applicants (as opposed to 14-18% in past years). What does this mean? Getting off the waitlist will be difficult! More students will remain on the waitlist and will inevitably be perpetually waitlisted (effectively, rejected). For many of the competitive schools, April 10th is the date admitted students are asked to notify the Admission Office of their enrollment decision. After this date, many parents know if their children will be starting public school in the fall and will have to decide if their children will be reapplying next year for the 10th grade. The reapplication to boarding schools (especially ones where students were waitlisted or rejected) can be tricky and will involve different admissions strategies.
Successful boarding school admissions requires expertise and experience to understand how to manage risks, navigate pitfalls, design the right admissions strategies, and most importantly understand the admissions policies and professionals who are making admissions decisions – in other words an admissions expert!

My clients have been stating that my admissions advice is priceless. I never truly equated my services with a price. I have always considered it as an investment in a child’s education.
Investing in your child’s future!
This week, I received a phone call from a mom who is a lawyer and partner of a major international investment banking firm. She eventually disclosed that she was my client 19 years ago when her parents hired me for private school admissions (she was admitted to Andover) and for college admissions (she was admitted to Harvard). She needed help with her son for Kindergarten placement in a prestigious private day school (By the way, she met her husband while they were both sophomores at Harvard).
I believe she recognized the potential generational effect of such an investment in her child’s educational future…PRICELESS!
Every parent wants the best for their child!
